History

Two movements, one service story

Lions and Leos share a history shaped by leadership, volunteering, humanitarian action, and youth development.

Lions History

1917

The beginning

Melvin Jones brings business clubs together in Chicago to form the Association of Lions Clubs.

1920

Lions go international

The movement expands beyond the United States with the Border Cities Lions Club in Windsor, Canada.

1925

Knights of the Blind

Helen Keller challenges Lions to serve as knights of the blind, beginning a century-long vision mission.

1945

Uniting Nations

Lions representatives help establish the NGO section of the United Nations.

1968

LCIF established

Lions Clubs International Foundation is created to support humanitarian service and grants.

1990

SightFirst launched

Lions begin a global campaign to restore sight and prevent blindness.

2017

100 years of service

Lions celebrate a century of community service in Chicago, where the association began.

2023

Partnering for kindness

LCIF and Lions Quest join The Choose Kindness Project for inclusion and youth wellness.

Leos History

1957

First Leo Club

Jim Graver and William Ernst help charter the first Leo Club at Abington High School, Pennsylvania.

1964

Sponsored program

The Leo Club Program becomes a sponsored program of Lions Clubs International.

1967

Official youth program

Lions International officially adopts Leo as a youth program for leadership, experience, and opportunity.

1969

Leoism in Sri Lanka

The first Sri Lankan Leo Club, the Leo Club of Wattala, is inaugurated with a team of cricketers.

1978

Sri Lankan growth

Leo clubs in Multiple 306 grow enough to support sub-district structures.

2005

Six districts

Multiple 306 is divided into A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2 for stronger administration.

2023

Maldives extension

The first Leo Club in the Maldives, Leo Club of Male, is formed through Sri Lankan Leo leadership.

Today

A living movement

More than 200 Leo Clubs serve across Sri Lanka, with school, university, and community clubs island-wide.
